Heritage High School will have a new addition to its football team when the Generals hit the practice field for their first spring football practice on Monday.

Principal Ronnie Bradford announced today, long-time Chattanooga Central Coach John Crawford would join the gridiron to assist Heritage Head Coach Tim James.

Bradford said after serving 33 years in Hamilton County, he felt Heritage was fortunate to be getting a man of his “character, attitude, knowledge and experience.”

“He’s young at heart” Bradford said. “And his goal is to stay 10 years. This is so big for us since we’re just starting a program.”

James will also be assisted by Alan Broom, Jason Scott and Kenny Hill.

Gordon Lee Wins Girls Class A State Golf

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans made the long drive to Waycross this weekend to compete in the Class A girls’ state tournament.

They’re driving back Monday night carrying a little more than they brought with them.

Sophomore Rachel Mason won the individual state championship after shooting an 83 and that, combined with teammate Jorden Watson’s 88, gave Gordon Lee their second state team championship in the last five years.

Watson, a junior, finished fourth overall in the event, held at The Lakes at Laura Walker Golf Course.

Gordon Lee’s team score of 171 gave the Lady Trojans a nine-shot win over runner-up Ware County Magnet School.

“It’s just been steady progress,” head coach Jared Willerson said in a phone call while returning to Chickamauga. “We finished fifth at state two years ago and third last year. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The Lady Trojans last won the state championship in 2004.

Two more Gordon Lee players, senior Christa Mariakis and junior Molly Ramsey, also played in the event, which takes only the lowest two scores to make up the team score.

Gordon Lee finished play approximately 2 p.m. on Monday and had to wait nearly four hours before the final groups finished and the scores were made official.

Willerson said putting on lightning-fast greens was the key to his team’s win on Monday.

“With the drought in Waycross, the greens were super fast,” he explained. “The USGA tested them (Monday) morning and they were rolling a 12 on the Stimpmeter, but our girls just flat putted better than any else. Rachel didn’t have a three-putt all day and Jorden only had a couple.”

Both Mason and Watson improved their scores significantly over last year’s state tournament.

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe’s goal of playing in the state playoffs was shattered last week.

However, it appears that Catoosa County neighbor Ringgold has punched its ticket into the Tigers sixth consecutive year of postseason play.

With just two games left to decide the four teams to represent Region 7-AAAA in the first round of the GHSA playoffs it’s still a race to decide the final berths.

Rome leads the region with a record of 10-2, despite its 11-7 loss to Ringgold on Friday.

On April 29, 2008 I had the opportunity to go see the #1 and the #7 battle out to the death at the home of the Warriors. This was also senior night for the Warriors and I can honestly that they had a good day. Each team got at least one home run. The Rome Wolves played their hearts out and the only problem that i could see was the pitching, he had an average of around 68 mph which is good for a high school. Rome did come out with an impressive win.

The Ringgold girls’ soccer team finally got to celebrate on Tuesday, April 15 in Rome .

The Lady Tigers defeated the Wolves, 2-1, to win the Region 7-AAAA title.

The Blue-and-White earned their sixth straight berth to the Georgia Class AAAA State Playoffs earlier this season.

However, this feat was long overdue, according to Ringgold Coach Leslie Sawyer.

“We’ve been so close to winning the region so many times,” she said. “It’s good to finally accomplish what we’ve set out to do.”
