Even coaches sometimes don’t mind admitting to being wrong.

When his Gordon Lee Trojans won a wild first-round playoff series at Lakeview Academy last weekend, head coach Greg Payne said he “couldn’t be more proud of this team.”

That was until Thursday when his Trojans knocked out top-ranked Aquinas, 8-6, in the third and deciding game of their best 2-of-3, second-round, Class A baseball series in Augusta.

“I guess I was wrong with what I said then,” Payne said. “What they did today exceeds what they did last week. These guys just keep surprising people, but I don’t know if they are even surprising themselves anymore.

Florida State Associate head coach Mickey Andrews has been a part of greatness for much of his football career as a player and as a coach.

As a player, he played on National Championship teams in 1961 and 1964 under Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama .

In 1971, he coached Livingston State (now West Alabama ) to a NAIA National Football Championship.

In addition, the Florida State defensive coordinator has directed squads that spearheaded National Championships in 1993 and 1999, and have often been the nation’s leader in defense.

Thursday night he spoke to more than 300 people and layers at the 2008 Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Spring Football banquet at the Colonnade in Catoosa County.

The Gordon Lee Trojans didn’t swing the bats as well today as they did this past Friday, but they swung them well enough to earn a split against top-ranked Aquinas in the second round of the Class A state playoffs in Augusta on Wednesday.

Aquinas (27-3) took game one 9-3, but the Trojans (19- 8) salvaged the nightcap, winning 11-6 and handing the Irish their first loss of the year against another Class A team.

Gordon Lee head coach Greg Payne elected to save senior ace Zack DeBord until the second game to avoid a matchup with Aquinas ace Andrew Foushee.
